The NSS Hierarchy

The Programme Adviser, NSS, New Delhi is the National Head controlling this scheme. The State Head is State Liaison Officer, NSS.

There are 15 NSS Regional Directorates all over India. NSS Cell, Dibrugarh University is under the administrative supervision of NSS Regional Directorate, Guwahati.

Programme Co-ordinator, NSS is the Operational Head and key functionary of the NSS at the University Level. The Programme Coordinator functions under the Vice Cancellor of the University who is the Chairperson of the Advisory Committee of the NSS Cell.

You can get weightage during admissions in higher studies and other benefits as decided by the institutions / universities. To encourage and appreciate the efforts of NSS volunteers, the government presents various awards at the national, state, and institutional levels. National NSS Awards are the Highest honor for NSS volunteers, Programme Officers, and Programme Coordinators & Institutions which is given for outstanding contributions in community services. Assam State NSS Awards Each state recognizes its best NSS volunteers, Programme Officers and Units, Programme Coordinators & Institutions for exceptional services which includes certificates, trophies, and cash prizes. Dibrugarh University Level Awards honour top-performing NSS volunteers & Programme Officers for their dedication and devotion in community & social services. You also get the opportunity to attend the Republic Day Parade as part of the NSS Contingent, Adeventure Camps, National Integration Camps, Youth Festivals and NSS Festivals ate different places of the country.

What you do at NSS?

NSS volunteers actively participate in community service, environment conservation, health awareness, and skill development. They organize cleanliness drives under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, blood donation camps, literacy programmes, tree plantation drives and disaster relief efforts while conducting awareness campaigns on road safety, gender equality, anti-drug initiatives, HIV/AIDS, and mental health. Volunteers also celebrate important days like Republic Day, Independence Day, National Youth Day, World Environment Day, and International Yoga Day by conducting rallies, seminars, and cultural programs to spread awareness. Special activities like health check-up camps, and workshops on social issues are taken up. Teaching underprivileged children are also organized.

You mainly do two types of activities - Regular Activities & Special Camping Programmes. Volunteers must complete 120 hours per year as part of regular activities. Each NSS volunteer must attend a 7-day Special Camping Programme once during their tenure. The camp involves full-day participation, with around 8 hours of work per day. The total working hours for a special camp is thus 56 hours.
